Squad Company 252 responded as a hazardous materials unit to a unique incident in New York Harbor.  Box 1199, Gravesend Bay and the Verrazano Bridge was transmitted early in the morning for a boat in distress.  As units responded, Brooklyn advised a large tanker carrying ethanol had had an explosion and severely damaged the ship.  As untis arrived contact was made with various agencies, including the United States Coast Guard, in an effort to divise a plan to mitigate the situation.  252 responded in the afternoon to relieve companies who had been operating since the morning.  Members were tranported to the ship via FDNY Marine units and were advised to monitor the atmosphere in and around the ship's holds with flammable gas meters.  Once on board it was obvious the ship had sustained major damage.  Squad 252 operated for several hours until relieved by additional hazardous materials units.
